‘Uganda delighted to host IPU Assembly and Related Meetings’

Maternal health will be a central issue of discussion during the 126th Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union scheduled to be held in Kampala, Uganda, March 31 – April 5, 2012.

Rebecca Kadaga, who is also the chief host of the event, said Uganda had campaigned to include maternal health on the agenda of this upcoming meeting during the meeting held in Panama City in April 2011.

The theme of the 126th IPU Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union and Related Meetings will be “Parliaments and People: Bridging the Gap.”

One of the main items on the agenda is “Access to health as a basic right: the role of parliaments in addressing key challenges to securing the health of women and children.”

During a press conference held at Parliament Building, December 20, Hon. Kadaga said, “This matter (maternal health) is very close to our hearts. Even before Parliament went on (Christmas) recess, we approved a motion on maternal health.”

In the motion Parliament asked government to carry out maternal deaths’ audits annually, establish the causes of the deaths and publish its findings; develop a policy of compensation of the families of all women who die as a result of maternal related causes while in government facilities; and to undertake to reform the midwifery training curriculum by enhancing the duration of training in maternal and child health modules.

Hon. Kadaga said, “It is expected that from these discussions, the resolutions and recommendations arrived at will be aimed at saving our dear mothers, sisters and daughters will be arrived at. These resolutions will be aimed at improving health services for women and girls.

ASGP

The Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP), constituted as a consultative body of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, seeks to facilitate personal contacts between holders of the office of Secretary General in any parliamentary assembly, whether such assembly is a member of the IPU or not. ASGP membership is thus independent of the IPU.
